In New York City, you don’t have to search very far for a variety of ethnic food. But if you’re looking for authentic jerk chicken, tender Oxtail and fried plantains you’ll find that Hibiscus, originally located in Morristown, NJ, is bringing the best Caribbean lunch to New Yorkers through Fooda. We spoke with Hibiscus Manager, Karlene Brandon, and can see firsthand why their mouthwatering dishes won Best Caribbean Lunch in NYC.

Why do you think consumers voted you Best Caribbean in NYC?

Our Chef, Orville Brandon, received his culinary training from the renowned Johnson and Wales University and has over 30 years of experience. He ensures that our food is of the highest quality and only uses cooking techniques that make every dish flavorful.

What’s the inspiration behind the menu at Hibiscus?

Our menu consists of traditional food that we eat back home in Jamaica. All dishes are made from family recipes so you may see classic Caribbean dishes on our menu, but they may have a different flare as recipes are handed down and remain a secret within our family.

What is your most popular dish?

Our Rasta Pasta, Island Brown Stewed Chicken, Jerk Chicken and Oxtail are all best sellers. We get tons of request for the Oxtail which falls right off the bone in an oxtail demi-glaze served with rice, beans, vegetables and sweet plantains. Our Rum Flavored bread pudding is a dessert made in-house and keeps people coming back time and time again.

What are some food trends you are seeing in NYC?

Foodies are looking for something different and authentic that also has a nice presentation. During the workday, people especially want something other than the typical deli sandwich and salad. Trying new and authentic food can really be the highlight of someone’s day.

What are your future plans for Hibiscus in 2017?

We would like to expand to other locations and grow our catering part of the business. Many people may not know that at our restaurant in Morristown, we offer live jazz and Caribbean music and a delicious, unique Sunday brunch buffet. We plan to continue offering this to our guests as it has been a huge asset to our business. You can find up to date event schedules on our website.

Have Hibiscus cater your next event with vibrant foods from the Caribbean, and stay tuned to see if they win the top honor of Single Best Lunch in New York City.
